The Detroit Red Wings have secured a key piece of their future, signing forward John Leonard to a one-year contract extension. The move rewards the 27-year-old after a standout season where he dominated for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins.

Leonard was an offensive force in the minors, leading the Griffins with 32 goals and 53 points. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the AHL Second All-Star Team for the second consecutive year, proving his consistency and scoring touch.

He also made his mark in the NHL, appearing in 11 games for the Red Wings and notching four points. Leonard made an immediate impact, recording a three-game point streak shortly after his Detroit debut in mid-December, showcasing the offensive spark he can provide at the highest level.

With six productive AHL seasons under his belt, amassing 224 points in 295 games, Leonard's extension signals the Wings' confidence in his development and his potential to contribute more regularly to the big club's lineup.

In other coaching news around the league, veteran bench boss Rick Bowness has agreed to a contract extension to remain head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets through the 2026-27 season. The 71-year-old took over in January and successfully steered the team to a 21-11-5 record, instilling a new competitive spirit.

Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell praised Bowness's leadership, stating he is "the right person to lead our club" and develop the players towards the ultimate goal of competing for the Stanley Cup. Bowness, who brings decades of experience from eight different NHL teams, expressed his excitement to continue building in Columbus, acknowledging the work ahead to meet the expectations of the organization and its passionate fans.
