In a stunning fall from grace, Swiss men's national hockey team head coach Patrick Fischer has been dismissed after admitting he used a forged COVID-19 vaccination certificate to travel to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The decision marks a dramatic reversal for the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, which initially stood by the coach after his confession.
Fischer, who had led the team since 2015 and was one of the nation's most successful coaches, acknowledged making a "serious mistake" by using false paperwork to circumvent China's strict travel protocols. In a statement expressing regret, Fischer explained he was in a "personal crisis" over vaccination but did not want to abandon his team at the Games.
The federation's initial support crumbled under public pressure, leading to his firing. "This is about values and respect, which are fundamental to Swiss Ice Hockey and which Patrick Fischer did not uphold," stated federation president Urs Kessler, conceding their first assessment was "too short-sighted."
The controversy erupted after Swiss media revealed Fischer had been fined nearly 39,000 Swiss francs ($50,000) in 2023 for document forgery related to a certificate purchased on social media. The timing is particularly awkward, with Switzerland set to host the upcoming IIHF World Championship next month.
Fischer, who was already scheduled to step down after the tournament, has been immediately replaced by Jan Cadieux, the previously announced successor. The episode serves as a stark reminder of the high ethical standards demanded in international sports, where trust and integrity are as crucial as performance on the ice.
