Milford High School softball made history on Saturday, rallying from a disastrous start to claim the program's first-ever 1A state championship in dramatic fashion. Playing at BYU's Gail Miller Field, the Tigers defeated Altamont twice—12-10 in a gritty comeback and 15-0 in a three-inning mercy-rule clincher—to bring home the elusive title.
"It didn't feel real to be playing on this field and for a state championship because we've never been there before, since we're usually 2A," said junior Jaidyn McMullin, who threw a three-inning no-hitter to seal the win. "It was unreal."
Milford entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed, but after dropping a bracket game to Altamont on Friday, the Tigers knew they needed two wins on Saturday to capture the crown. Game 1 started in nightmare fashion: five errors in the top of the first inning allowed Altamont to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. "Well, we didn't have five errors in the first inning in our pregame speech," joked coach Tyler McMullin.
But the Tigers didn't panic. Relying on a "next man up" mentality, Milford strung together quality at-bats and tied the game 7-7 by the end of the second inning. A four-run fifth inning gave the Tigers the lead for good, and their defense held Altamont scoreless over the final three frames. The comeback mirrored Milford's thrilling win over Wayne the night before. "We learned a valuable lesson in that comeback win," said coach McMullin. "When that kind of thing happens, it sticks with the team, and you're able to do it again the next time."
After committing six errors in the first two innings of Game 1, Milford's defense flipped a switch. The Tigers played error-free ball for the final five innings of Game 1 and all three innings of Game 2—eight straight innings of clean defense. That turnaround paved the way for McMullin's no-hitter in the championship clincher, a dominant performance that capped a historic day for a young, resilient program.
