For three innings on Tuesday, the Herriman Mustangs looked poised to turn their Region 2 softball clash with Mountain Ridge into a runaway. But as any athlete knows, dominance isn't given—it's earned through resilience.
The Mustangs ultimately showcased that resilience, weathering a determined comeback attempt to secure a decisive 9-3 victory, their fifth win in a row. This win further cements their commanding position in the region, a testament to a squad that performs under pressure.
Herriman built an early 4-0 lead by combining sharp defense with disciplined at-bats. They capitalized on opportunities, with standout Aspyn Hawes driving in two early runs. However, the game's momentum shifted dramatically in the fourth inning.
A few walks and timely hits from Mountain Ridge loaded the bases, cutting the lead and putting the outcome in doubt. In a pivotal moment, Herriman turned to pitcher Sierra Prescott to steady the ship.
"In those types of situations, I really had to trust my team and my defense behind me," Prescott said, highlighting the collective trust essential in team sports. "I know they have my back."
Mountain Ridge managed to plate two more runs, but Prescott's entry proved to be the turning point. From there, the Mustangs' defense locked down, and their offense reignited.
Herriman methodically added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, while Prescott commanded the circle, racking up strikeouts and holding the Sentinels scoreless. Head coach Heidi McKissick praised her pitcher's clutch mentality, calling her a "rock-solid horse" and a reliable closer.
The offensive spotlight belonged to Aspyn Hawes, who delivered a spectacular performance. Going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four RBIs, and a daring steal of home for the final run, Hawes embodied the explosive, all-around play that defines a winning team.
"I feel like this team is just amazing," Hawes said. "We pick each other up." That ethos—of trust, resilience, and picking each other up—is what transforms a group of talented players into a region-dominating force. It's the same mindset that drives athletes to push their limits, whether on the diamond or in pursuit of their personal best.
