In a thrilling showdown that showcased the rising talent in high school girls flag football, the Lennard High School Longhorns pulled off a stunning upset against the nation's top-ranked team, the Alonso Ravens, in the FHSAA Class 4A Region 2 final. The 13-7 victory in Tampa, Florida, was a testament to the grit and determination of a team that has faced one of the toughest schedules in the country.
Head coach Travis Combs made a bold move earlier in the season, switching to freshman quarterback Hayden Schofield to spark the offense. That decision paid off in spectacular fashion as Schofield led the Longhorns (12-7) to three consecutive wins against powerhouse programs—Bloomingdale, Plant, and now Alonso. "Her first three wins are Bloomingdale, Plant, and now Alonso in the regional championship," Combs said. "To get that avenged, the loss was really cool."
The Longhorns' defense was the true star of the night, intercepting Ravens senior quarterback Gabby Werr three times. Werr, who completed 25 of 43 passes for 205 yards, had little room to operate as Lennard's defense clamped down when it mattered most. The game opened with a bang as Schofield connected with junior wide receiver Makenzie Walker for a touchdown, giving Lennard an early 6-0 lead.
Alonso (19-1) answered quickly, with Werr finding Mia Garcia for a touchdown to go up 7-6. From there, both defenses took control, turning the game into a gritty battle for momentum. The Longhorns' offense struggled to find the end zone again, but their defense kept them in the fight, forcing key stops and giving their offense multiple chances.
With under five minutes remaining, Schofield delivered the decisive blow, finding sophomore wide receiver Grace Valenzuela in the corner of the end zone to put Lennard ahead 13-7. The Longhorns' defense held firm on Alonso's final drives, sealing the victory and sending a message to the rest of the nation: Lennard is a force to be reckoned with.
This win is a reminder that in flag football, heart and hustle can overcome even the toughest odds. For fans of the sport, it's a story of resilience, teamwork, and the thrill of an underdog triumph—qualities that define the best of high school athletics.
