The 3A baseball state tournament is heating up, and the action at Lindquist Field on Monday did not disappoint. Four teams—Grantsville, Carbon, Union, and Canyon View—stayed hot and marched on in the winners bracket, delivering performances that had fans on their feet.
Grantsville, the No. 2 seed, came out swinging and never looked back. Payton Cummings was the star of the show, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and five RBIs to power an 11-1 rout of No. 10 Emery. The Cowboys broke a scoreless tie with a six-run third inning, then added three in the fourth and two more in the sixth. Patton Rose chipped in with a 2-for-2 day and three RBIs, while pitcher Jordan Fawson shut things down on the mound, striking out 10 over 5 1/3 innings. With seven extra-base hits, Grantsville’s offense looked unstoppable—and they’ll look to keep that momentum going on Tuesday.
Over in another bracket, No. 11 Carbon showed that seeding doesn’t matter when the bats are hot. Logan Bennett led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBIs as the Dinos crushed No. 14 Logan 13-3. Carbon built a 3-0 lead through three innings, then exploded for eight runs in the fifth to seal the win. Ricky Sandoval also made his mark, going 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. Logan managed only three late runs, but it wasn’t enough to slow down Carbon’s relentless attack.
Union, the No. 6 seed, turned in a near-perfect performance against Providence Hall. Tyson Marx was a force at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two walks, while Dylan Watahomigie was efficient on the mound, needing just 50 pitches over four innings to secure a 14-0 shutout. The Cougars capitalized on Providence Hall’s mistakes, scoring 12 runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. Their defense was flawless, allowing only two hits and committing zero errors—a recipe for success in tournament play.
Finally, Canyon View proved that sometimes one run is all you need. Zach Maine delivered a gem on the mound, leading the No. 4 seed to a tense 1-0 victory over Manti. It was a pitcher’s duel from start to finish, but Maine’s command and composure kept Manti off the board, securing the win and a spot in the next round.
With all four winners advancing, Tuesday’s games promise even more drama at Lindquist Field. Whether it’s Grantsville’s power hitting, Carbon’s clutch surges, Union’s all-around dominance, or Canyon View’s pitching mastery, these teams are proving they have what it takes to make a deep run in the 3A state tournament.
