Saturday’s rainy weather may have put a damper on many outdoor plans, but Rhode Island high school sports still delivered some thrilling action. Here’s a look at the standout performances from the day.
In softball, Smithfield’s Maddie Bose learned that even the best-laid plans can go awry—especially when the alarm clock doesn’t cooperate. Bose missed the start of Saturday’s 9 a.m. matchup against Bay View, but her teammates stepped up in a big way. Gianna Tutt took the circle in the first inning and held the Bengals scoreless, thanks in part to a key double play. Meanwhile, the Sentinels’ bats came alive, erupting for seven runs in the bottom half of the first. Ava Lopez ignited the rally with a two-run double, Mei Li Mitchell drove in a run, and Joy Matteson cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Bose arrived and took over from the second inning onward, delivering six strong innings. She allowed just three hits and one earned run, walking two and striking out four. Smithfield’s offense kept the pressure on, answering every Bay View score. By the sixth inning, the Sentinels led 11-2, and Mitchell sealed the 12-2 victory by scoring on a wild pitch for the walk-off win.
The win was crucial for Smithfield, which is fighting for a first-round home playoff spot. It was a team effort from start to finish, proving that even a sleepy start can lead to a dominant finish.
