The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is shifting gears, and with it comes a fascinating driver storyline. As the series moves from endurance classics to its first sprint race of the season at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, Porsche Penske Motorsport's endurance teammates will find themselves as potential rivals.
Julien Andlauer, who shared the victorious #7 Porsche 963 with Laurin Heinrich and Felipe Nasr at Daytona and Sebring, will now see Heinrich piloting the #5 Porsche for the privateer JDC-Miller MotorSports team. With sprint races limited to two drivers per car, Heinrich's temporary move creates a unique intra-Porsche battle on the iconic Long Beach streets.
Andlauer sees the situation as a positive challenge. "It's going to be more of a fun scenario," the 26-year-old said. "We talked about it recently and it's great for him to get more track time in the car... I think it is going to be cool to have another Porsche fighting maybe a bit more up front." He added with a laugh, "hopefully it's not going to be too quick on the other car! And don't take our points."
The matchup adds several intriguing layers. Not only will Heinrich be tackling the demanding 1.968-mile street circuit for the first time, but he'll do so in a car with a different specification. While the factory Porsche Penske squad runs the latest 2026 Evo updates, JDC-Miller has opted to stay with the 2025 package. This could prove strategically interesting, as the latest Balance of Performance adjustments hit the factory team harder following their dominant Sebring win, where they led all but 60 laps.
This weekend promises a compelling mix of teammate camaraderie and competitive fire, all unfolding on one of motorsport's most dramatic stages.
