The Atlanta Hawks are facing a pivotal offseason after their first-round playoff exit against the New York Knicks, and all eyes are on forward Jonathan Kuminga. Despite swirling trade rumors, one NBA insider believes the 23-year-old will be back in a Hawks uniform next season.
In a recent report from ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel, the Hawks' forward depth—specifically Kuminga's future—has become a hot topic. Atlanta holds a $24.3 million team option on Kuminga for next season, and while some might expect the team to move on after a disappointing six-game series loss, Siegel argues the opposite.
"There really isn't a reason for Atlanta not to pick up the option," Siegel wrote. "By picking up the final year of his deal, the Hawks can not only continue to develop Kuminga, but he could also wind up being the key piece to an in-season trade during the 2026-27 season since he will be an expiring salary."
Kuminga's journey to Atlanta began when the Golden State Warriors traded him in a deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Bay Area. Since joining the Hawks, the young forward has averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 47.6% from the field—solid numbers for a player still finding his role.
Siegel compares Atlanta's approach to that of the Toronto Raptors, suggesting the Hawks will "be selective on the trade market and not force any action." This patient strategy means Kuminga isn't just a potential trade chip—he's also a developmental project worth keeping around.
One thing is clear: the Hawks won't be making a run at Milwaukee Bucks stars this summer. Instead, they're focused on internal growth and smart roster moves. For Kuminga, that likely means another season to prove his worth in Atlanta's system.
