Atlanta Hawks head coach Quin Snyder admitted the Karl-Anthony Towns matchup in his team’s first-round Eastern Conference playoff series against the Knicks will be difficult for his undermanned team to handle. “That’s a challenge for us right now,” said Snyder, whose Hawks lost backup center Jock Landale to an ankle injury for two weeks. “It’s a little bit of pick your poison, you know? As the Atlanta Hawks gear up for their first-round Eastern Conference playoff battle against the New York Knicks, head coach Quin Snyder is facing a daunting tactical puzzle. The challenge? Containing Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, a matchup Snyder openly admits will be a major test for his undermanned squad.

"That's a challenge for us right now," Snyder stated, highlighting the recent loss of backup center Jock Landale to a two-week ankle injury. "It's a little bit of pick your poison. How do you handle him on the post with a mismatch? How do you handle pick and roll, especially with him and Jalen Brunson? Great offensive players demand that you adjust every time down the court, and we'll be doing that."

The numbers underscore Snyder's concern. Since Towns joined the Knicks in 2024, he has dominated the Hawks, averaging 28.1 points and 13.1 rebounds on elite 50% shooting from both the field and three-point range over seven meetings. This season alone, he dropped 36 points and 15 rebounds in one victory and a hyper-efficient 21-point, 12-rebound performance in another.

With Landale sidelined, Atlanta's frontcourt depth is severely tested. Starter Onyeka Okongwu will bear the primary burden, but the reserves—Tony Bradley and Mohamed Gueye, who is playing out of position—present a significant step down. Snyder acknowledged the patchwork plan, noting they picked up Bradley from their G-League team and are asking Gueye to guard a premier big man, a tough assignment.

The coach's strategy hinges on making Towns uncomfortable. "We've got to keep him off the foul line," Snyder emphasized. "There's times where it's good defense, better offense. We have to focus on the ways he's scored against us that are real and try to make him do something different—though he can do a lot of different things."

Snyder's familiarity with Towns, built over nearly a decade coaching against him in the Western Conference, adds a layer of intrigue to this playoff chess match. The Hawks' defensive schemes will need to be creative and relentless to slow down a player who has consistently been their poison of choice.
