NBA legend Gary Payton has the basketball world buzzing with his bold prediction about LeBron James' next move. The Hall of Fame guard recently shared on the Night Cap show with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson that he believes the Los Angeles Lakers superstar could be heading to the Golden State Warriors next season.
"There's a good shot if he leaves, he's going to Golden State. I'm telling you he's coming to Golden State if he leaves," Payton said, adding fuel to the ongoing speculation around the 41-year-old forward's future.
This isn't the first time LeBron has been linked to the Warriors. Rumors swirled during the 2024 NBA trade deadline, and the connections run deep—his close friendship with Draymond Green and long-standing admiration for Stephen Curry make the fit intriguing. But there's a major hurdle: Golden State's salary cap situation. The Warriors likely can't offer LeBron a max contract, and at this stage of his career, taking a significant pay cut seems unlikely.
If LeBron truly wants to don a Warriors jersey, two paths emerge. He could accept the taxpayer mid-level exception, which sits around $6.1 million, or the Lakers and Warriors could orchestrate a complex sign-and-trade deal. Given LeBron's track record, the latter seems far more plausible if he's serious about a move.
LeBron just wrapped up his eighth season in Los Angeles, a tenure that's seen both highs and lows. He's played 479 games in purple and gold, averaging 25.9 points per game, and led the Lakers to their 17th championship in 2020. While the Lakers have made it clear they want to keep him for what would be his 24th NBA season, the rumor mill keeps turning—and Payton's comments only add to the drama.
Whether this is wishful thinking from a Warriors legend or a real glimpse into LeBron's plans, one thing's for sure: the NBA offseason just got a whole lot more interesting.
