The 25-year-old was masterful, walking two and matching a career-high with nine strikeouts over eight-plus innings of work.

Messick, making just his 11th big-league start, was in complete control, facing just one batter over the minimum through eight dominant frames. The tension at Progressive Field peaked in the ninth, however, when Leody Taveras' ground ball snuck past a diving Juan Brito for a single, breaking up the historic bid.
