Sometimes, you do everything right and still come up short. That was the story for the Cleveland Guardians in their 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins in Game 2 of the series—a game that felt more like a cruel twist of fate than a fair contest.
The bottom of the 10th inning encapsulated the heartbreak perfectly. With the winning run in scoring position, the Guardians' bats were alive but unlucky. Chase DeLauter crushed a lineout with an expected batting average of .520. Daniel Schneeman followed with an even harder-hit ball, a .670 expected batting average—right at a defender. Then, with two outs, Travis Bazzana lined out to left field on a .380 expected hit probability. Three barrels, zero results. As they say, sometimes the baseball gods just aren't on your side.
Despite the tough outcome, there were genuine bright spots to build on. Tanner Bibee delivered easily his best start of the season, showing the kind of dominance that could anchor this rotation all year. If he can maintain anything close to that level, the Guardians' pitching staff will be in excellent shape. Additionally, Hunter Gaddis contributed a clean inning of relief—a welcome sign for a bullpen that will need depth as the season wears on.
Offensively, the Guardians squared up Twins starter Joe Ryan repeatedly but had nothing to show for it. It's the kind of luck that evens out over a long season, and the team's approach at the plate remains sound. There's plenty of reason to feel good about this lineup moving forward.
Game 3 is set for Sunday at 1:40 pm ET, with Gavin Williams taking the mound against Andrew Morris. The Guardians will look to bounce back and even the series—hoping this time, the baseball gods smile on them.
