The basketball world is in mourning today as the Memphis Grizzlies announced the tragic passing of forward Brandon Clarke at the age of 29. The team released a heartfelt statement on Tuesday, expressing their devastation over the loss of a player who was as admired for his character as he was for his game.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke," the Grizzlies said in a statement, which did not disclose the cause of death. "Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten."
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also shared a statement, reflecting on Clarke's legacy. "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Brandon Clarke. As one of the longest-tenured members of the Grizzlies, Brandon was a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with enormous passion and grit. Our thoughts and sympathies are with Brandon’s family, friends, and the Grizzlies organization."
Clarke's management company, Priority Sports, remembered him as "the gentlest soul, who was the first to be there for all of his friends and family," adding they were "beyond devastated" by the news.
Selected as the 21st overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft, Clarke quickly made a name for himself, earning All-Rookie honors in his debut season. Known for his high-flying dunks and tenacious defense, he became a fan favorite in Memphis and signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension with the team in 2022. However, his career was hampered by injuries in recent years—he played just six games in the 2023-24 season, 64 games in 2024-25, and only two games this season due to calf and knee issues.
His passing comes just six weeks after he was arrested in Arkansas on charges including possession of a controlled substance and fleeing in a vehicle while speeding, adding a layer of complexity to an already heartbreaking story.
For fans who wore his jersey with pride, this loss is deeply personal. Brandon Clarke's journey from a promising rookie to a resilient veteran reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment on and off the court.
