On May 1st, the Wisconsin Badgers community came together in a powerful show of unity as head coach Greg Gard and his wife Michelle hosted the 9th annual Garding Against Cancer Event at the Kohl Center. With over 600 attendees packing the venue, the evening was a celebration of hope, resilience, and the incredible impact this initiative has had across the state of Wisconsin.
Before the event kicked off, Coach Gard took a moment to reflect on the journey. Now in its ninth year, the initiative is on the verge of a remarkable milestone—crossing the $11 million mark in total funds raised. "It's gotten beyond our wildest imaginations," Gard shared, his voice filled with gratitude. "Nine years ago, we never could have envisioned this. Being at capacity again tonight speaks volumes about the support we've received from people all over the state."
The evening wasn't just about numbers, though. It was a family affair, with three fellow Badgers coaches—Mike Hastings, Mark Johnson, and Kelly Sheffield—joining Gard on stage. "Having them here is special," he noted, "but what matters most is the impact we're making." Gard emphasized that while his name may be attached to the cause, countless others have left their fingerprints on its success. "Ultimately, we're helping people just a few blocks away at the Carbone Center, and across the entire state."
An initiative of this magnitude doesn't happen in a vacuum. Gard was quick to acknowledge the army of supporters who have rallied behind the cause. "We have great partnerships across campus—the UW Foundation, the Alumni Association, UW Health, the Carbone Center, and of course the athletic department," he explained. "Everyone has jumped on board because they see the real, positive impact this has made on Wisconsin residents. That's the driving force: giving people access and knowledge when they face a cancer diagnosis."
For Badgers fans and the broader sports community, events like this remind us that athletics aren't just about games—they're about coming together for something bigger. As the Garding Against Cancer initiative continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of teamwork, both on and off the court.
