Six games, no wins - what is going wrong for Kolkata Knight Riders? There has been plenty of discussion around the form of Australia all-rounder Cameron Green, who became the IPL's most expensive overseas signing and the third-most expensive player ever when KKR signed him for 25.2 crore (£2.1m) in December's auction. Green had scored 56 runs in his first five innings before hitting his stride with 79 from 55 balls in the defeat by Gujarat Titans, and is just beginning his return to bowling after a series of injuries.

Six games, zero wins. The Kolkata Knight Riders' 2024 IPL campaign is in serious trouble, leaving fans and pundits alike asking: what's broken in the Knights' armoury?

Much of the pre-season spotlight shone on their marquee signing, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green. Arriving with a record-breaking price tag of 25.2 crore, the pressure was immense from the first ball. After a slow start with the bat, Green finally found his rhythm with a classy 79 off 55 balls against the Gujarat Titans—a bright spot in yet another defeat. His return to bowling, after injury concerns, is also a gradual work in progress.

While Green's form is a talking point, KKR's issues run much deeper. A shaky, unsettled batting order has been a major weakness. Green himself has been shuffled between three different positions, disrupting any chance for partnerships to gel. His innings against Gujarat perfectly illustrated the problem: after a brilliant recovery with Rovman Powell, the lower order collapsed, losing six wickets for just 41 runs. Crucially, Green saw very little of the strike in the death overs, stifling the innings' momentum at a critical time.

The bowling attack hasn't fared much better, hampered by injuries to key Indian pacers. This lack of stability, both with bat and ball, has created a perfect storm for the two-time champions. As bowling coach Tim Southee noted, struggles are magnified when you're losing. The hope now is that Green's return to form can be a catalyst, but KKR needs the entire unit to step up and find their fighting spirit—and fast. The season is slipping away.
