The Torres High School tennis team is on the brink of history, standing just one match away from capturing their first-ever section championship. As the top seed in the playoffs, the Toros have powered through their bracket with a remarkable season that has captivated their community. But this journey is about more than just wins and losses—it's a tribute to a teammate whose spirit continues to inspire them every step of the way.
The team has been playing without Rafael Barragan Donan, or "Rafa," as he was affectionately known. Rafa tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident last September, leaving a void that extends far beyond the court. "When he came by, everybody connected," recalls coach Mark Melchor. "He was like the rock for our team."
Rafa was the glue that held the Toros together, a player whose infectious smile and unwavering positivity lifted everyone around him. "He was definitely like a little brother," says teammate Ivan Lara. "He would always come in smiling. You'd never see him upset. You'd never see him on a bad day. He'd make your day great—that's just how he was. There was never a bad thing about him."
His mother, Hilda Adriana, wants the world to remember Rafa for that same contagious joy. And the Toros have made it their mission to honor his legacy this season. From pre-game rituals to the way they carry themselves on the court, Rafa's presence is felt. "We always meet in the pool room before a game, and he would always say, 'Let's go out there and be ready to win today,'" Melchor said.
The support doesn't stop there. Rafa's family continues to show up for the Toros matches, cheering from the stands just as he would have. It's a powerful reminder that true sportsmanship extends beyond the game, uniting a team through both triumph and tragedy.
As the Toros prepare to face Foothill in the Division IV section championship on Tuesday, their mission is clear. "We hope that you're looking down on us and we're making you proud every day, just like how you made us proud every single day you were out here," Lara said. "We dedicate the season to him, and we want to win it for him."
Whether they bring home the title or not, this team has already shown what it means to play with heart, purpose, and an unbreakable bond. It's a story that reminds us all why we love sports—and why the right gear, from performance apparel to team spirit wear, can help you carry that legacy with pride.
