Hanford High Football Head Coach Cannon Sanchez is back in the Valley with a fresh Tampa Bay tan and an immeasurable amount of football knowledge after an unforgettable week at the Buccaneers National Coaching Academy. This immersive experience gave Sanchez a front-row seat to the NFL coaching world, from off-season workouts and rookie minicamp to position group meetings—offering a level of detail that most fans never get to see.
"Just being with those guys every single day, how they operate and the attention to detail that goes into every practice, every individual meeting, every team meeting was truly second to none," Sanchez said.
Working closely with the quarterback room, Sanchez got an up-close look at Baker Mayfield, who proved to be as down-to-earth as advertised. "He's a new dad and wasn't a big-time type of guy," Sanchez recalled. "He shook my hand, introduced himself, and wanted me to start every meeting with a dad joke so he could learn some new ones."
When asked if he delivered, Sanchez laughed: "I think I folded under pressure. I don't think I had a good one." Fortunately for Sanchez, dad jokes weren't part of the application process. Instead, coaches were asked to break down a specific play, going back and forth with the Buccaneers' staff to showcase their skills.
Sanchez stood out among thousands of applicants, earning one of just 25 spots for coaches from around the world. Now back in Hanford, he's already applying what he learned to his 5th annual youth camp, set for May 30. "There are so many behind-the-scenes things you don't get to see as a fan," he said. "We'll bring back individual drills we liked and team-building ideas they put together."
For Sanchez, the camp is about giving back to the sport that has given him so much. "That day is so special because football has given so much to me. It's really cool to give back and have other guys give back as well." Whether you're a young athlete dreaming big or a coach looking for fresh inspiration, Sanchez's journey proves that great sports stories start with passion—and maybe a few dad jokes along the way.
