History was made under the Kentucky sun on Saturday evening, as Golden Tempo stormed to victory in the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. With a breathtaking stretch drive, the 30-1 longshot not only captured the first jewel of the Triple Crown but also etched trainer Cherie DeVaux's name into the sport's record books.

DeVaux became the first woman to train a Derby winner, a milestone that has been decades in the making. She joins Jena Antonucci, who won the 2023 Belmont Stakes with Arcangelo, as the only two female trainers to capture a Triple Crown race. For DeVaux, who started her own stable just eight years ago, the victory came in her very first Derby opportunity.

"This is bigger than me," DeVaux said during the week, acknowledging her new role as a trailblazer for young girls dreaming of a career in racing. She is only the 18th woman to saddle a horse in the Kentucky Derby, making this triumph all the more significant.

Golden Tempo, ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, defeated a field of 17 challengers in the classic 1 1/4-mile test. Ortiz, a Churchill Downs regular known for his riding prowess, secured his first Derby victory on his 11th attempt—beating his brother, Irad, who finished second aboard Renegade. Longshot Ocelli rounded out the top three.

The race proceeded with 18 horses after Great White was a late scratch for flipping and unseating his jockey. But nothing could derail Golden Tempo's historic run down the homestretch.

As the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby sets the stage for the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The last horse to sweep all three was Justify in 2018. Whether Golden Tempo can follow that path remains to be seen, but for now, the racing world is celebrating a barrier-breaking moment that will inspire generations to come.
