The Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings' top affiliate, boast a strong trio in net as they open the playoffs Saturday at Manitoba.

The Grand Rapids Griffins are heading into the playoffs with a secret weapon that could make all the difference: an embarrassment of riches in goal. As Detroit's top affiliate prepares to open the postseason Saturday against Manitoba, the team's trio of netminders has the organization buzzing about what lies ahead.

In playoff hockey, goaltending often separates champions from also-rans. For the Griffins, that depth could be their ultimate advantage. Sebastian Cossa, Michal Postava, and Trey Augustine form what might be the deepest goaltending group in the entire AHL—a luxury that few teams can claim.

This strength comes at a crucial time for the Red Wings organization. With starter John Gibson's future in Detroit clouded by questions, the Griffins' crease competition is more than just a playoff storyline. It's a proving ground for who might earn the backup role next season.

"I want to see how the playoffs play out in Grand Rapids," said Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman. "We certainly have an interesting trio of young goaltenders with potential, and it's a very competitive environment for them. We'll be able to make a better assessment when Grand Rapids' season ends—and hopefully, that's a long playoff run."

The numbers back up Yzerman's optimism. Cossa, the 2021 first-round pick (15th overall), has finally delivered on his promise after years of patient development. At 23, he posted his best professional season: 26-8-4 with a 2.33 goals-against average, .915 save percentage, and five shutouts. That consistency was exactly what the Wings hoped to see.

"Looking back at past seasons, having strong starts or a strong finish but not being able to have that full season—it was a big thing for me this year," Cossa said. "There's still been a couple blips, a game or two here and there, but for the most part, I feel like I've been more consistent."

Then there's Postava, 24, an undrafted free agent from Czechia who has been a revelation. His numbers are eye-popping: 17-6-1 with a 1.71 GAA and .937 save percentage, plus four shutouts. He's adapted to North American hockey faster than anyone anticipated, making the Wings' signing look like a masterstroke.

With three capable options, the Griffins are set up for a deep playoff push—and for the Red Wings, that could mean finally solving their goaltending puzzle.
