There was a lot of experience Glen Gulutzan gained in the 12 years between being let go by the Stars after his first two seasons as an NHL head coach and being re-hired last summer — by the same general manager who soon after taking that role in 2013 decided not to keep him.

Glen Gulutzan's return to the Dallas Stars' bench this season is a story of resilience and hard-earned wisdom. After his initial two-year stint as head coach ended in 2013, Gulutzan embarked on a 12-year journey across the NHL, collecting invaluable experience that has now come full circle.

General Manager Jim Nill, the same executive who once decided not to retain him, re-hired Gulutzan last summer, recognizing the profound growth in the coach's approach. "He's lived it," Nill stated. "How do you build your résumé? You've got to go through experiences. He's gone through those experiences and those situations."

That journey included 947 regular-season games and 93 playoff contests as an assistant with Vancouver, head coach in Calgary, and a key staff member in Edmonton—the very team that eliminated Dallas in the Western Conference Final the past two seasons.

Now, the 54-year-old Gulutzan has steered the Stars to a formidable 50-20-12 record and 112 points, the third-highest total in the NHL, as they enter the playoffs against the Minnesota Wild. His steady hand has been crucial, navigating injuries and maintaining focus through the highs and lows of a demanding campaign. "He's got composure behind the bench," Nill emphasized. "It's always about the next moment, the next game."

This second act stands in stark contrast to his first, which began in 2011 during a tumultuous period of bankruptcy and ownership uncertainty for the franchise. With a wealth of experience now under his belt, Gulutzan is not just back—he's ready, proving that sometimes the best path forward is a long road back.
