Fairfield High School has turned to a familiar face to lead its girls basketball program into a new era. Carl Woods is returning to the head coaching role, a position he knows well and never truly left behind in spirit.
The move follows an offseason change, with the program looking to reset after a challenging couple of seasons. For Woods, the call from Athletic Director Aaron Blankenship presented a perfect, if unexpected, opportunity. "I didn't think it would come so soon," Woods admitted, "but after speaking with my family, it was a no-brainer."
Woods is no stranger to building a program. Before his previous stint leading the Fairfield girls, he was the longtime head coach of the Cincinnati Christian boys basketball team. This experience gives him a unique perspective on developing talent and culture from the ground up.
His decision to step away previously was driven by a desire to support his son, Logan, during his college basketball career at Wright State. "It was hard to step down," Woods reflected, "but I wanted to share those experiences with him." Even during that time, he remained a fixture in the Fairfield community, his identity as "Coach Woods" never fading.
Now, he returns with a renewed passion and a wealth of professional experience that translates directly to the court. In his day job as a Senior Health and Safety Professional and a Certified Master Athletic Administrator, Woods hones the leadership and organizational skills crucial for running a successful high school program.
Athletic Director Aaron Blankenship is confident in the fit, emphasizing the value of Woods's deep ties to the school's culture and his proven ability to connect with players. As the team looks to rebuild, they have a leader who understands the blueprint for success, both on and off the hardwood.
