In a blockbuster twist straight out of an NFL Draft war room, the Detroit Lions' bold ambitions may have been bigger than anyone realized—and a behind-the-scenes video from the New York Giants just spilled the beans.
The Lions ultimately made a modest move in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, trading up from pick 50 to 44 to snag Michigan edge defender Derrick Moore. The price tag? Just their second fourth-round pick (No. 128). A fair deal, nothing flashy.
But according to footage released by the Giants on Monday, Detroit was reportedly gunning for something much bigger. As New York prepared to go on the clock at No. 37, Giants general manager Joe Schoen fielded multiple calls about a potential trade down. While the calls were anonymous, Schoen's comments on the phone left little doubt about who was on the other end.
“Those just so happened to be the draft slots of the Lions’ two fourth-round picks and the first of their two fifth-round picks,” the video suggests, hinting at a deal that would have included Detroit's No. 50 pick to leap 13 spots.
Had the Giants agreed, the Lions would have surrendered a much larger haul—including the picks that eventually became Michigan linebacker Jimmy Rolder (No. 118) and Arizona State cornerback Keith Abney (No. 157).
So why the aggressive push? Lions GM Brad Holmes explained after Day 2 that Moore was his top-rated defensive end available when Round 2 began. “Derrick might have been our No. 3 or No. 4 edge rusher overall, but today, he was our No. 1 for what was available,” Holmes said. “You can’t worry about other teams’ boards. You’ve just got to get the guy you want.”
In the end, the Giants held firm, selecting Tennessee cornerback Co—and the Lions settled for their more modest trade. But for a moment, it looked like Detroit was ready to go all in on their guy. And in the high-stakes world of the NFL Draft, that kind of ambition is exactly what keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
