Argentina international Gianluca Prestianni's hopes of representing his country at the upcoming FIFA World Cup have been dealt a major blow after a ruling was reached regarding his six-game ban handed down by UEFA

Gianluca Prestianni's dream of representing Argentina at this summer's FIFA World Cup has suffered a devastating setback after FIFA extended his six-game ban to have worldwide effect. The talented winger, who plays his club football for Benfica, now faces the very real possibility of watching his country's opening matches from the sidelines.

The controversy dates back to February's UEFA Champions League playoff first leg between Benfica and Real Madrid. Shortly after Vinicius Jr. scored what proved to be the only goal of the match, Prestianni was caught on camera making a comment while covering his mouth. The Brazilian star immediately alerted the referee, claiming the Argentine had directed racist remarks toward him.

Prestianni was subsequently banned for the second leg, where Benfica fell 3-1 on aggregate and were eliminated from the competition. A UEFA investigation in April concluded that the comments were homophobic in nature, resulting in a six-match suspension. Under UEFA's ruling, Prestianni had already served one game, with two more to be served immediately and three additional matches suspended for two years.

Now, FIFA has stepped in to enforce the ban globally, meaning it applies to all international competitions, including the World Cup. FIFA's Disciplinary Committee stated, "The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has decided to extend the six-match ban imposed by UEFA on Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni to have worldwide effect."

For the reigning world champions, this is a troubling development. If Lionel Scaloni selects Prestianni for the 26-player squad heading to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the winger would be forced to miss Argentina's first two group-stage matches. Argentina opens their Group J campaign on June 16 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, against Algeria. Their second match follows on June 22 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, against Austria.

Prestianni would only become eligible for Argentina's final group-stage clash against Jordan. While the team remains strong, losing a creative attacking option for crucial early games could impact their rhythm as they look to defend their World Cup title.
