The New York Mets are about to welcome another promising young talent to the big leagues: A.J. Ewing. He will become the third player from the Mets' 2023 draft class to make his major league debut, and his journey to this moment is nothing short of impressive.
A multi-sport athlete at Springboro High School in Ohio, Ewing was a standout on both the baseball diamond and the football field. But his love for the game—and his raw talent—soon set him apart. He earned All-Conference First Team honors three years in a row, was named All-Southwestern Ohio Conference in his junior season, and capped off his senior year by winning the 2023 Great Western Ohio Conference Player of the Year award after a triple-crown performance: a .464 batting average, four home runs, and 37 RBIs.
The Mets selected Ewing in the free agent compensation round of the 2023 MLB Draft—a pick they received when Jacob deGrom signed with the Texas Rangers. Despite having a commitment to the University of Alabama, Ewing chose to turn pro, signing for a $675,000 bonus, well above the slot value for the 134th overall pick. He debuted with the FCL Mets that summer, showing early promise with a .286/.524/.357 slash line in seven games.
When the 2024 season began, Ewing picked up right where he left off. In 19 games with the Florida Complex League, he hit .254/.422/.571, slugging five home runs and stealing five bases. That earned him a promotion to Single-A St. Lucie, where he spent the rest of the season. Across 90 games in his first full professional campaign, he posted a solid .233/.361/.390 line with 10 home runs and 13 stolen bases.
Now 20 years old, Ewing started the 2025 season back in St. Lucie—but not for long. In just 18 games, he exploded with a .400/.506/.615 slash line, including three doubles, four triples, and a home run. That hot start has earned him the call-up he's been working toward. Keep an eye on this rising star—he's got the tools and the drive to make an impact.
