In a move that shakes up the Georgia high school football landscape, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy head coach Micah Hughes is trading in his Eagles green for a new challenge across state lines. After two standout seasons building the program from scratch, Hughes has officially stepped down to accept the head coaching position at Providence Academy in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Hughes leaves behind an impressive legacy in Marietta. As the founding head coach of the Eagles' varsity football program in 2023, he compiled a remarkable 14-2 record over just two seasons—a testament to his ability to build a winning culture quickly. The 2024 campaign saw Mt. Bethel post a 5-1 record in its inaugural varsity season, followed by an even stronger 9-1 finish in 2025, the best mark in the program's brief history.
"After much prayer and careful consideration, I have made the difficult decision to step down as Head Football Coach at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy," Hughes shared in a heartfelt statement. "Since starting the program in 2023, it has been an incredible privilege to help build and grow something special. I am so proud of the development of our players, not only as athletes but as young men. Together, we have worked to establish a football program that reflects hard work, discipline, and character."
Hughes emphasized the personal weight of the decision, adding, "This decision has not come easily. My family and I have absolutely loved our time in the Marietta area."
The timing of the move is notable, as the Eagles have promising talent returning for the 2026 season. Quarterbacks Gino Luckie—who threw for 1,086 yards and 18 touchdowns—and Ronin Thompson (719 yards, 13 touchdowns) are both underclassmen poised to lead the offense. With a No. 390 ranking in the final 2025 Georgia High School Football Massey Rankings, the program Hughes leaves behind has a solid foundation for continued success.
For Georgia high school football fans, this transition marks the end of an era at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy—but also signals the start of an exciting new chapter for Hughes and his family in Tennessee. Whether you're an Eagles supporter or just love the game, it's a reminder that in football, as in life, great leaders often find new fields to conquer.
