The Georgia Bulldogs are making a bold move to shake up the SEC recruiting landscape, targeting a quarterback prospect already committed to a rival. The program has officially extended an offer to three-star quarterback Derrick Baker, as announced by his high school, Milton High School in Alpharetta, Georgia. Baker, who has been committed to the Tennessee Volunteers since February 2026, now finds himself at the center of a heated recruiting battle.
Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 226 pounds, Baker is a class of 2027 prospect ranked as the No. 40 quarterback in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite. His commitment to Tennessee came early, but Georgia's late offer signals the Bulldogs are serious about securing their future signal-caller. Interestingly, while Baker has plans to visit Tennessee's campus on June 5, he has not yet made an official trip to Georgia's facilities. The Auburn Tigers currently lead in the number of visits from Baker, per Rivals' visit counter, adding another layer of intrigue to this recruitment.
For Georgia, the urgency is clear. With current quarterback Gunner Stockton expected to move on, the Bulldogs are searching for the next leader under center. However, they've missed on top targets like five-star Elijah Haven (Alabama) and four-star Davin Davidson (Florida), leaving them with limited time to land a high-rated 2027 QB recruit. This offer to Baker could be a pivotal move to fill that gap.
Overall, Georgia's 2027 recruiting class has yet to gain full momentum. Ranked No. 22 nationally, the class took a hit when three-star wide receiver Aden Starling decommitted. Despite that, the Bulldogs have secured two five-star commits—running back Kemon Spell and cornerback Donte Wright—but hold only seven commitments total. Fans can take comfort in knowing that Georgia historically makes a strong push in June and July, so there's plenty of time to turn things around. For now, all eyes are on Baker and whether the Bulldogs can flip this talented quarterback from an SEC rival.
