Georgia's defensive line plans for the upcoming season have hit a significant setback. According to a report from Dawgs Central, Auburn transfer and projected impact pass rusher Amaris Williams suffered a torn ACL near the end of Tuesday's practice, an injury expected to sideline him for the entire 2026 campaign.
This is a major blow for a Bulldogs unit looking to revitalize its pressure off the edge. Last season, Georgia registered just 20 total sacks, its lowest team total since the year 2000. Williams, who recorded two sacks in a backup role for Auburn last year, was seen as a key piece to help address that need after transferring in as one of the defense's most notable offseason additions.
Head coach Kirby Smart had recently emphasized the importance of Williams learning the system and adding value, stating his development would begin with the reps he earned this spring. Now, the Bulldogs must look elsewhere to generate a pass rush.
The responsibility will fall more heavily on returning players like Quintavius Johnson and Gabe Harris, who is currently out for spring practices. The team will also hope for continued development from redshirt freshman Chase Linton and an immediate contribution from incoming four-star freshman Khamari Brooks.
With the spring transfer portal window closed, Georgia cannot seek an immediate replacement and will have to develop its existing roster. The injury news casts a shadow over the final spring practices, including Saturday's G-Day game, as the coaching staff reshuffles its defensive front for the season ahead.
