The Georgia Bulldogs basketball program, under coach Mike White, has been hit hard by the opening of the NCAA transfer portal, facing a significant exodus of top-tier talent. With seven players entering the portal since it opened on April 7th, the team's roster is undergoing a major transformation.
The most impactful losses are two players ranked among the portal's elite: leading scorer Jeremiah Wilkinson and defensive anchor Somto Cyril. According to 247Sports, both are considered top-20 transfers nationally, a blow that will force a substantial rebuild in Athens.
Jeremiah Wilkinson, ranked as the No. 17 overall player and the No. 3 combo guard, leaves a massive offensive void. As Georgia's leading scorer, he was the team's most potent three-point threat, top playmaker in steals, and excelled at drawing contact. His departure marks the second consecutive year Georgia has lost its premier guard to the portal, following Silas Demary's exit last offseason—a move that ultimately led him to a Final Four run with UConn.
Perhaps even more concerning is the loss of center Somto Cyril, who is actually rated higher than Wilkinson as the No. 12 overall transfer and the second-best center available. Cyril was a defensive force, leading the SEC in blocks and anchoring Georgia's paint protection. While he led the team in rebounding, his playing time was sometimes limited by foul trouble, leaving the Bulldogs to navigate stretches without their premier rim protector.
Losing two players of this caliber in a single portal cycle presents a formidable challenge for Coach White and his staff. The offseason focus will now shift to recruiting from the portal themselves, as they look to replace this lost production and leadership to remain competitive in the tough SEC landscape.
