Great Britain's Paralympic champion William Ellard has sent a powerful message to the world, shattering the S14 100m freestyle world record at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in London. The 20-year-old sensation powered to gold with a blistering time of 50.41 seconds, slicing a massive 0.49 seconds off the previous mark set by Brazil's Arthur Xavier Ribeiro.

For Ellard, a gold medalist in the S14 200m freestyle and mixed 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2024 Paralympics, this record was a clear target. "It was the aim," he confirmed after the race, while already setting his sights on a new barrier. "It would be nice to go 49 [seconds] one day but it hurt for the last 15 metres, I just had to put my head down." This relentless drive not only earned him the gold but also secured his spot at the upcoming European Championships in Paris.

Ellard's historic swim headlined a night of standout performances at the championships. Angharad Evans also made waves, breaking the British record in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:19.70, surpassing Molly Renshaw's 2021 mark by over a second. "I'm super happy and that was really unexpected," said Evans, who credited trusting her race plan against a tough field.

The event showcased depth across the board, with victories from double Olympic champion Matt Richards in the 100m freestyle, Lauren Cox in the 50m backstroke, and Georgia Sheffield in the Para 200m freestyle. With 36 British titles on the line this week in London, the competition is proving to be a crucial proving ground for the nation's top aquatic talent as they build momentum for the summer ahead.
