Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has made it clear that a strong bond between the coach and sporting director is essential for success, while also hinting that midfielder Manu Koné could be on his way out of the Stadio Olimpico this summer.
Speaking ahead of Roma's crucial away match against Parma, Gasperini emphasized the importance of alignment in the club's leadership structure. "The coach and sporting director must be very close and connected," he stated during Saturday's press conference. "Without that connection, it's difficult to build something lasting."
The Giallorossi are still very much in the hunt for a Champions League spot, sitting just one point behind fourth-placed Juventus with only three games remaining in the season. Every match carries enormous weight, and Gasperini knows there's no room for error.
"Every game is decisive, especially now," Gasperini said. "Parma play good football, even if they have secured survival. No team ever gives anything away, and this is positive."
The timing of Gasperini's comments is particularly telling. Just two weeks ago, club owners made the bold decision to part ways with Senior Advisor Claudio Ranieri, who had a strained relationship with the current coach. Sporting director Frederic Massara is also reportedly on his way out at season's end, further fueling speculation about a major front-office overhaul.
When asked if Roma is already behind schedule in planning for next season, Gasperini offered a measured response. "A lot depends on what the club wants to do, so we need to turn to them. I don't see anyone holding an advantage. Things evolve quickly at the end of the season."
The coach also praised his squad's resilience throughout a challenging campaign. "This is a valuable group, as the results prove. Their reaction in difficult moments was evident."
On the transfer front, Gasperini acknowledged the financial implications of Champions League qualification but remained pragmatic. "Obviously, the Champions League brings more substantial financial resources to the market, and everyone wants to qualify for this reason. But the world is full of clubs that know how to operate well even without considerable resources."
As for Koné, Gasperini's subtle hints suggest the midfielder's time in Rome may be coming to an end. With Atalanta's sporting director Tony D'Amico reportedly on the verge of leaving Bergamo, the summer transfer window promises to be a period of significant change for several Serie A clubs.
For now, all eyes are on Parma as Roma looks to keep their Champions League dreams alive in what promises to be a thrilling finish to the season.
