Gary Neville recently opened up about the "big problems" he faced when sharing a room with Manchester United teammate David Beckham—revealing that the two football legends were far from compatible as roommates.
After graduating from United's famed academy, young players were paired up for overnight trips, and Neville and Beckham found themselves sharing a twin room for six months. Despite being close friends for three decades—Neville even served as best man at Beckham's wedding—their living arrangement was anything but smooth.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville explained: "I roomed with David Beckham for about six months, and then the whole rooming system stopped because everyone got their own rooms. I think the club realized players weren't compatible—each had different bedtimes. I had two big problems with Becks, well, he had with me!"
The root of the conflict? Their wildly different daily rhythms. "I used to go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5am," Neville said. "He would stay up until 11pm and want to wake up at 8am. So he was keeping me up from 9 to 11, and then I was getting him up at 5 in the morning. It just wasn't working at all."
But the bedtime clash wasn't the only issue. Neville revealed that their tidiness habits were worlds apart. "Secondly, he is the cleanest person," Neville said. "He gets into his room, lights candles, puts pictures up—everything has to be perfect. It's been the same since he was 18. I just throw everything everywhere. It did not work at all."
Their personalities also clashed. "I'm always talking, always arguing, and he was the complete opposite," Neville added. "He would listen to music, want peace, want to be chilled. It's the complete opposite end of the spectrum from where I was at."
Fortunately for both—and for Manchester United fans—the room-sharing experiment was short-lived. The pair channeled their differences onto the pitch instead, where they enjoyed tremendous success, winning six Premier League titles together. It just goes to show: even the best teammates aren't always meant to share a room.
