Gard: Roster came together ‘as good as we could have scripted’

Wisconsin had a very intentional offseason that went according to plan.

When the Wisconsin Badgers looked ahead to this offseason, they knew the road wouldn't be easy. Tough financial decisions loomed, and the departure of star guard John Blackwell was a painful but necessary reality. Add to that the exits of seniors Nick Boyd, Andrew Rohde, and Braeden Carrington, along with freshman forward Aleksas Bieliauskas, and head coach Greg Gard had a roster that needed a serious rebuild.

But if the first week of the transfer portal is any indication, the Badgers didn't just survive the offseason—they thrived. With a clear, intentional plan, Wisconsin quickly landed George Washington transfer Trey Autry, a natural fit at shooting guard. Then came their top target: Miami (OH) wing Eian Elmer, a versatile scorer who can stretch the floor. Finally, they added size and rim protection with Hofstra center Victory Onuetu.

Speaking to reporters earlier this month, Gard couldn't hide his satisfaction. "It came together really very intentionally and probably about as good as we could have scripted with how it all played out," he said. That kind of confidence is rare in the chaotic world of college basketball roster construction.

Defense was the Badgers' clear priority. They added point guard Owen Foxwell, an experienced lead guard known for his lockdown defense and playmaking. That should stabilize the backcourt, while Onuetu brings the kind of shot-blocking presence that changes games in the frontcourt. On the wing, they've added length and athleticism that should help Wisconsin close out on shooters and disrupt passing lanes.

Of course, replacing the scoring of Blackwell and Boyd won't be easy. But Autry and Elmer are proven scorers, and Austin Rapp is poised to take a big leap alongside Nolan Winter in 2026-27. The Badgers also retained a strong core of young talent, including Jack Janicki, Zach Kinziger, Hayden Jones, and Will Garlock. Gard believes that continuity—keeping players in the system—will be just as important as the new additions when it comes to improving the team's defense next season.

For Badgers fans, the message is clear: this roster was built with purpose, and the foundation looks stronger than ever.
