Welcome to the one-quarter mark of the season

As we cross the one-quarter mark of the season, the Royals find themselves at a pivotal moment in their campaign. Tonight's matchup against the Tigers isn't just another game—it's a chance to reset the narrative and prove that this team has the resilience to chase bigger goals.

One of the most insightful traditions on Royals Review has been Suff76's "Path to 90 Wins" tracker. At the quarter-point, a team following that path would sit at 19-19. The Royals entered this series at 17-21, and after dropping the opener, they now stand at 18-21. But here's the encouraging part: if they can split tonight's game and tomorrow's, they'll be just 19-22—only two games off the pace needed for 90 wins. Considering the brutal 8-game losing streak they endured earlier, they've already clawed back a tremendous amount of ground.

It's easy to get caught up in the daily drama of wins and losses, but the smartest way to follow a baseball season is in chunks. Think homestands and road trips, not individual games. Sure, that Cleveland series felt disappointing on a game-by-game basis, but from a series perspective, it was solid. The Oakland series was tough, but the Mariners series was terrific. Looking at the bigger picture, a 4-2 road trip is fantastic by any measure.

Now, the Royals have a chance to make this homestand a success. If they take at least two out of three from the Tigers, that's a winning homestand—and in baseball, winning more games than you lose on any homestand or road trip means you're always making up ground. A win tonight would guarantee a good homestand, and a win tomorrow would make it a great one. But even if they win tonight and drop the finale, that's still a successful homestand. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, but as fans, we often treat every single game like it's the last one of the season.

Tonight, the Royals have every reason to feel confident. Michael Wacha takes the mound, and in five of his seven starts this season, he's delivered above-quality performances. A quality start means six innings and three runs allowed—and Wacha has exceeded that standard in all five of those outings. With the offense showing signs of life and the bullpen settling in, Kansas City has a golden opportunity to take control of this series and build momentum for the long road ahead.
