"Completely undeserved result for us," Silva told BBC Sport after the match. "At 11 v 11 we were the best team, on the front foot, with some good connections." The Fulham boss pointed to a pivotal missed opportunity that could have changed the narrative entirely. "We had a massive chance with Rodrigo Muniz completely alone in the six-yard box. The header has to at least find the target because it's a big chance for us to get what we deserve at that time."
The match took a dramatic turn in the first half when both teams were reduced to ten men—a rare occurrence that has only happened twice this Premier League season, the other being Manchester United's clash with Chelsea back in September. In fact, this marks the first time since the 2001-02 campaign that multiple top-flight games have featured first-half red cards for both sides.
Silva was adamant that the sending-off was harsh on his side. "I didn't see any image that shows it should be a clear red card. I've seen many replays. The VAR has different images that I was not able to see from my analysis guys." He acknowledged that the red card "completely changed the dynamic of the game" and that his team needed to show more maturity after going a man down. "We knew in football, when you're in front and there is a red card for the other team, you have to be more careful and mature. With the experience we have, we have to control the moments."
Despite halftime adjustments, Fulham struggled to regain their rhythm in the second half. "There was more space for both sides, but the front players have to take players on. We were not at the top of our game in the second half," Silva admitted.
The defeat adds to a troubling trend for Fulham, who have now lost five of their last six Premier League matches played in May, scoring in just two of those outings.
