When a manager saves a club from relegation in their first full season, the football world takes notice. That's exactly the situation Christian Fuchs finds himself in at Newport County—and now, rumors are swirling that the Premier League legend could be headed back to his old stomping grounds.
Fuchs, who famously lifted the Premier League trophy with Leicester City in the historic 2015-16 season, has been quietly building a reputation in management. After taking over at Newport, he guided the Exiles to safety in League Two, a remarkable achievement for a first-time head coach. But with Leicester now facing life in League One following their own relegation, the whispers have begun: could Fuchs be the man to lead the Foxes back?
Former Leicester and Wales striker Iwan Roberts thinks that would be a mistake—at least for now. "First 16 games under Dave Hughes, they won 11 points. Since then, Christian Fuchs has been in charge for 30 games and he's won 32 points," Roberts explained on the BBC's Feast of Football podcast. "With roughly a point per game, you stay in the league quite comfortably."
Roberts argues that Fuchs has done exactly what was needed at Newport, stepping into a club "fighting for its life" and keeping them in the Football League. "He came in at a tough time," Roberts added. "He's done what he needed to do and he's kept them in the league."
The links to Leicester are understandable—Fuchs spent five successful years at King Power Stadium and is still highly thought of there. But Roberts isn't convinced he's ready for that step. "Is he the man to get Leicester back in the Championship? I'm not too sure," he said. "I'd love to see him have another season at Newport and try and build on what he's achieved this season, because it has to be better."
For a club like Newport, stability is everything. And for Fuchs, who is still learning the ropes as a manager, another season in League Two could be the foundation for something special. Sometimes, the best move is the one you don't make.
