It’s been a quiet Nebraska football off-season—and honestly, that’s been refreshing. The team is putting in the work, and for once, we’re not hearing much about it.
Lately, the biggest stories have centered on Jason Peter’s comments on 93.7 (no issue there) and some remarks from the Unsportsmanlike Conduct crew on 1620 the Zone about a high school quarterback recruit’s tweet. If anything, that last one says more about them than it does about the program.
In the words of Billy Beane from Moneyball: “That’s what losing sounds like.” And for a while, the silence felt like progress.
Then came Anthony Colandrea.
The Nebraska quarterback—penciled in as the starter for 2026—sat down with On3’s Pete Nakos and dropped some bold expectations. “Expectations at Nebraska are to win,” Colandrea said. “You’re not here to just not win a national championship. I’m not coming here to just win eight or nine games. I want to win a national championship; I want to go to the playoffs.”
I actually love that he believes it. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove people wrong. You can feel the fire.
But here’s the thing—he clearly hasn’t noticed that Nebraska has been winning the Off-Season National Championship every single year for a decade. That trophy case is full of May hype and summer buzz, but come October and November, the shelves go bare.
Let’s be real: if Nebraska wins eight or nine games this season, given the 2025 schedule, that’s a huge step. It would feel like 10 or 11 wins in a normal year. So yeah, that’s worth celebrating.
But let’s keep the chatter down until the leaves start falling. I’m tired of winning in May. Let’s win when it actually counts.
