Francis Mauigoa has been projected for months as an early 1st-Round prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft. However, there has been recent injury news that could affect his stock, and subsequently the Lions draft day plans.

With this new information, I have updated my Francis Mauigoa Medical Report. Here is an excerpt:
Ian Rapoport reported a disc issue that caused symptoms late in the 2025 season.
A symptomatic disc issue ended Sam LaPorta’s season due to back surgery. A similar issue may have led to surgery and the end of Halapoulivaati Vaitai’s career when he was with the Lions. The repetitive hyperextension of the spine with blocking can cause constant aggravation of the spine.
Rapoport stated that Mauigoa "currently is symptom-free”. However, the fact that Mauigoa has already been symptomatic means it’s very likely he will become symptomatic again once he starts playing football.
The report of “not considered a candidate for immediate surgery” is glaring due to the inclusion of the word “immediate”. It implies that a future disc surgery is very much a possibility. Spinal issues can be unpredictable, and the risk may take Mauigoa off many team’s boards in the early rounds.
The Lions have previously drafted in the 2nd round a player with college back issues in Levi Onwuzurike, who ended up needing an L5-S1 spinal fusion in the NFL. This experience may preclude the Lions from taking another chance on a college back problem.
If Mauigoa does fall in the draft, that could push other healthy OT options upwards. This could affect what OT options the Lions have available at the #17 pick. On draft day, Brad Holmes may need to become more aggressive to move up to get the OT he wants.
