The Washington Huskies are making a strong push for one of California's top defensive prospects, four-star safety Malakai Taufoou. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound standout from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo has been a key target for position coach Taylor Mays as the Huskies look to bolster their secondary for the 2027 class.
Ranked as the No. 34 safety nationally and No. 30 player in California by 247Sports, Taufoou has emerged as one of the most coveted recruits on the West Coast. After collecting 22 offers, he trimmed his list to a final five in April: BYU, California, Oregon, Penn State, and Washington. With a decision looming, he has scheduled three official visits—Cal on June 5, Penn State on June 11, and Washington on June 19—setting up a pivotal summer.
Coming off a stellar junior season with 50 tackles, six tackles for loss, and four interceptions, Taufoou has the instincts and versatility that fit perfectly into defensive coordinator Ryan Walters' scheme. He excels at reading quarterbacks in coverage, stepping into passing lanes, and attacking downhill against the run. His ability to line up at safety, linebacker, or nickelback mirrors the skills of Alex McLaughlin, who earned All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2025 playing the "down safety" role for Washington.
The Huskies are also developing freshman Gavin Day into a similar multi-position threat, and adding Taufoou would provide immediate depth and competition. He's one of four safeties set to take official visits to Seattle this summer, joining fellow four-stars Gavin Williams, Isala Aisa Wily-Ava, and Jaden Walk-Green.
For a Washington defense looking to reload in the secondary, Taufoou's blend of size, physicality, and football IQ makes him a natural fit—and a recruit to watch closely as June approaches.
