Liam Hendricks will reportedly join a National League team.

Former Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks is getting another shot at the big leagues. The 37-year-old has reportedly signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs, as first reported by The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli on Wednesday.

Hendriks hasn't pitched in a major league game since May 27, 2025, when he took the mound for Boston. His journey back to the mound has been nothing short of remarkable. Before the 2024 season, he inked a two-year, $10 million deal with the Red Sox, returning to the game after beating non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He tossed five innings for the Chicago White Sox in 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

His comeback with Boston was rocky, to say the least. In 12 2/3 innings, he allowed 12 hits, seven walks, and 10 earned runs before landing on the injured list with right hip inflammation—a setback that ended his 2025 season. He signed with the Minnesota Twins this spring but was granted his release after failing to make the Opening Day roster.

Now, the Cubs are taking a low-risk gamble on a pitcher who was once one of baseball's most dominant closers. From 2019 to 2022, Hendriks led all relievers with a 9.5 fWAR, posting a stellar 2.22 ERA and an incredible 7.93 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He'll join a Chicago bullpen that just welcomed closer Daniel Palencia back from the IL. The Cubs currently sit atop the National League Central with a 27-15 record, despite dropping their last three games.

For Hendriks, this is a chance to write one more comeback story—and for Cubs fans, a reminder that even in the most competitive of sports, resilience often pays off.
