When you've poured your heart and soul into a team for years, leaving isn't just a transaction—it's personal. Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander knows that better than most. In an emotional letter for The Players' Tribune titled "The Full Story Behind Why I Stepped Away from the NFL," Alexander opened up about the painful reality of being released by the only franchise he ever wanted to call home.
"I'd always thought of myself as a Packer for life, had always wanted to end my career in Green Bay," Alexander wrote. "And yeah, I understand that the NFL is a business. I get that. But at the same time, just being honest here … it wasn't easy for me coming to grips with that possibility. With the idea of potentially not being a Packer anymore."
The breakup began during the 2025 offseason, when the Packers approached Alexander about taking a pay cut. With a base salary of $16.15 million on the books and only 14 regular-season games played over the previous two years due to a string of injuries, the move made sense from a business perspective. But for a player who had given everything to the green and gold, it was a tough pill to swallow. When no agreement could be reached, Green Bay made the decision to release him.
What followed was a struggle that went far beyond the football field. "After I got cut, I tried to pretend like it was no big thing, but I never really fully dealt with all the emotions I was feeling," Alexander explained. "What I've realized since, in working with my therapist, is that me leaving Green Bay … it was almost like a marriage coming to an end."
For someone who had devoted so much of his life to the game, the emotional weight was immense. "It lingers. And sticks with you. Or at least it did with me. And I can tell you point blank that I absolutely blamed myself in the moments when I'd think about that divorce," he added.
Less than two weeks after his release, Alexander signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens. But even as he joined a new locker room, the ghosts of Green Bay followed him. Throughout training camp, he was still dealing with the lingering effects of a PCL injury and surgery from the previous year—a physical reminder that letting go isn't always a clean break.
For fans and athletes alike, Alexander's story is a powerful reminder that behind every jersey change, there's a human story of resilience, healing, and the courage to start over. Whether you're lacing up for game day or just finding your next step, sometimes the hardest plays are the ones we make off the field.
