Naples Classical Academy is making a major statement in Southwest Florida basketball, and they're doing it with a familiar name from the NBA hardwood. The school has hired former NBA forward Anthony Bonner as its new boys' basketball head coach, a move that signals ambitious new beginnings for the program.
Athletic Director Nahum St. Fort aimed high in his search, seeking a leader who could instantly elevate the team's profile. He found his candidate in Bonner, who brings a wealth of experience from a six-year NBA career with the Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, and Orlando Magic, followed by a successful stint playing professionally in Europe.
For Bonner, this marks a poignant return to the sidelines after a nearly two-decade hiatus. He stepped away from coaching following the birth of his son, Brock, and a call to ministry. Now, with Brock entering his senior year of high school, the timing feels full-circle. "I just see it as fitting that God would give me the opportunity to finish what I started 17 years later," Bonner told local media.
His coaching philosophy aligns perfectly with the school's mission. In discussions with St. Fort, Bonner emphasized that success is "about treating the whole student," a holistic approach that extends far beyond Xs and Os. This focus on player development and character resonated deeply, making him the ideal candidate to build a new culture.
Adding a compelling layer to the story, Bonner will get to coach his son, Brock Bass-Bonner, a talented transfer who averaged over 20 points and 9 rebounds per game last season. This father-son dynamic, combined with Bonner's proven track record as a player and a former head coach at his St. Louis alma mater, has generated significant excitement.
With a respected former pro at the helm and key talent on the roster, Naples Classical is poised for a dramatic leap. The graduation of stars from other local schools opens the door, and Bonner's arrival has positioned his new team as one to watch, aiming not just for wins, but for lasting impact on and off the court.
