In a significant staff move for UCF women's basketball, new head coach Gabe Lazo is bringing a trusted colleague from his Tennessee days to Orlando. Josh Theis, who served as the Lady Vols' director of video and creative content for the last five seasons, is following Lazo to UCF, where he will take on an expanded role as an assistant coach and video coordinator.
Theis has been a key behind-the-scenes figure in Knoxville for seven seasons, starting as a graduate manager under former coach Kellie Harper before his promotion. His work went far beyond just editing film; he was instrumental in crafting the program's digital identity and social media presence, working hand-in-hand with Lazo.
This move highlights the growing importance of video and creative content in modern college basketball recruiting and player development. At Tennessee, Theis's responsibilities evolved to include assisting with scouting reports and managing all film exchange, showcasing a skillset that blends technical expertise with tactical understanding.
Lazo, who was officially hired at UCF on April 4 after a brief stint at LSU, clearly values their established partnership. In a school release, he praised Theis as "a versatile up and coming star" with a passion for the game and a drive to elevate the student-athlete experience.
Theis also played a crucial role in Tennessee's recent recruiting success, contributing to a 2025 class ranked No. 2 nationally by ESPN. His familiarity with Lazo's philosophy and system should provide immediate stability as UCF looks to build its program in the Big 12.
Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Theis stated, "I have had the chance to see his ability to develop, connect, and create impactful relationships with student-athletes. He truly is a players coach... I am ready to get to work!"
A Cincinnati native and Xavier graduate, Theis brings a solid foundation from his time as a student program assistant for the Xavier men's team, rounding out a resume perfectly suited for this multifaceted role in the evolving landscape of college basketball.
