Former Iowa women's basketball guard Emely Rodriguez has found her next home. After entering the transfer portal as one of five Hawkeyes to leave the program this offseason, Rodriguez announced Wednesday that she's signing with the Syracuse Orange.
Syracuse head coach Felisha Legette-Jack couldn't hide her excitement about the addition. "Emely will bring us instant offense," Legette-Jack said. "She is a ferocious competitor that is willing to lay it on the line every day. I love Emely's intensity of purpose, passion, and defense! I am thrilled to get this HUGE YES in May! Orange Nation, please help me welcome Emely Rodriguez to our Orange Family."
During her time at Iowa, Rodriguez showed flashes of her potential in limited action. A back injury and a reported suspension kept her to just six games this past season, but she made the most of her opportunities. The guard averaged 7.2 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 42.5% from the field and an impressive 80% from the free-throw line. Her 3-point shooting (14.3%) is an area where she'll look to improve with the Orange.
Rodriguez joins her third program in as many seasons, bringing experience and a competitive edge to a Syracuse team that just wrapped up a 24-9 season (12-6 ACC) and upset No. 8 seed Iowa State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. She becomes the fourth transfer portal addition for Legette-Jack this offseason, joining Sarah Rambus, Tyi Skinner, and Jaleesa Molina.
As for eligibility, Rodriguez could have two or three years remaining depending on whether the NCAA approves a medical-hardship waiver for her time at Iowa. Either way, Syracuse is getting a player who's ready to compete from day one.
