Former Iowa women's basketball guard Emely Rodriguez is on the move again, announcing her transfer to Syracuse University this week. The move marks her third school in as many years, as she looks to find a lasting home in the ACC.
Syracuse's women's basketball team officially welcomed Rodriguez via social media on May 13, signaling a fresh start for the talented guard. "Welcome to the Orange Family, @Emyrodriguez21," the program posted, generating excitement among fans eager to see what she can bring to the court.
Rodriguez entered the transfer portal on April 6, the first day it opened, after a challenging single season with the Hawkeyes. Her time at Iowa was cut short by a persistent back injury, limiting her to just 85 minutes of playing time across six games, where she scored 43 points. It was a far cry from the impact many hoped she would make after transferring from UCF last offseason.
The first signs of trouble emerged during Iowa's late-November appearance at the WBCA Showcase in Orlando. Rodriguez played just four minutes in the Hawkeyes' win over Miami on Nov. 22—her last action of the season. Shortly after, the back injury sidelined her, forcing her to watch home wins against Western Illinois and Fairfield from the bench. She made the trip to Rutgers on Dec. 6 but remained inactive.
Iowa coach Jan Jensen later revealed that the back issue likely originated during the team's final practice in Florida or their first session back in Iowa City. "She was a little behind, and then the injury happened, and she just never really got cleared to be a part of things," Jensen explained. "I'm very proud that we continued to hopefully train her and treat her back and get her strengthened through whatever decision she was going to make. At the end of the day, it was best that she chose to go find another stop. Hopefully, she'll find the right match this time that can really help her."
Rodriguez missed December trips to Ames and Brooklyn for the Women's Champions Classic, but she returned to the bench on Dec. 28 against Penn State. From there, she was present for every one of Iowa's final 21 games, though she never suited up again, remaining listed as "out" on the availability report each time.
Now, with a clean slate at Syracuse, Rodriguez will look to put the injury woes behind her and rediscover the form that made her a sought-after prospect. For a player who has shown flashes of promise, this transfer could be the fresh start she needs to shine on the ACC stage.
