Caleb Banks snuck into the top 20 of this year's draft, and ESPN considers him one of the better picks based on team fit.

The NFL Draft is always full of surprises, and this year, former Florida Gator Caleb Banks delivered one of the biggest. The Minnesota Vikings snagged the defensive lineman with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and ESPN's Matt Miller is already calling it one of the top-50 individual selections out of 257 picks made over the weekend.

Now, you might think that a top-20 pick landing at No. 43 on Miller's list of best picks, steals, and team fits sounds underwhelming. But here's the thing: not every draft selection is a home run. Teams often miss on positions of need or fail to match value with pick number. The Vikings, however, managed to check both boxes with Banks.

Banks was one of the top defensive tackles in a draft class that was notably thin at the position. So when the Vikings reached a bit to fill a glaring hole in their defensive line, Miller gave it a thumbs-up. "Foot injuries sidelined Banks throughout last season and in the predraft process," Miller noted. "But when healthy, he should be an immediate starter, especially with Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave being released this offseason. The middle of the Vikings' line was low on talent, and Banks is easily the most traits-rich player on the roster. Based on value, this pick is a big reach, but it fills a massive need."

Banks was ranked No. 48 on Miller's final big board, but he was always considered a potential first-rounder thanks to the shallow pool of defensive linemen in this class. A standout performance at the NFL Draft Combine helped him overcome any injury concerns teams had, and now he's poised to make an immediate impact in Minnesota. For a player who entered the draft with questions about his health, that's no small feat.

Whether you're a Gators fan or just love a good underdog story, Banks' rise is a reminder that talent and determination can overcome even the toughest odds. And for the Vikings, it looks like they've found a cornerstone for their defense.
