Former Cubs reliever elects free agency following roster move

After being outrighted earlier in the week, Vince Velasquez has made up his mind regarding his time with the Chicago Cubs.

In a season where every game counts, the Chicago Cubs are making roster moves to stay competitive in the NL Central—currently just one game behind the Cincinnati Reds. One of those moves has led to a notable departure from the organization.

Earlier this week, the Cubs outrighted veteran reliever Vince Velasquez and infielder Scott Kingery to their Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs. Both players had struggled to find their footing at Wrigley Field this season. Kingery managed just one hit in eight games, posting a .250/.250/.250 slash line. Velasquez, meanwhile, made only one appearance for Chicago this season, tossing 2.1 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers in late April.

While Kingery has opted to remain with Iowa—he appeared in the team's game on Thursday night—Velasquez has chosen a different path. According to the Minor League transaction tracker, the 33-year-old has elected free agency after being sent down, giving him a chance to find a spot on another major league roster.

Velasquez brings a decade of big-league experience to the market, having pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, and most recently the Cubs. That kind of résumé could attract teams looking for bullpen depth or a spot starter as the season heats up.

For Cubs fans, this move signals that the front office is serious about fine-tuning the roster for a playoff push. And for Velasquez, it's a chance to write the next chapter of his career.
