Mark Stroud's journey through Georgia high school football is the kind of story that reminds us why we love the game. A true football lifer, Stroud first fell in love with the sport as a player at Swainsboro High before going on to shape countless young lives over three decades as a head coach.

With a career record of 273-111, Stroud's numbers place him among the elite — his 273 wins rank 20th all-time in Georgia history. But for this coach, the scoreboard was never the whole story. His remarkable run included one season at his alma mater, 16 years at Toombs County, and another 16 at Calvary Day, where he wrapped up his head coaching tenure after the 2024 season.

Along the way, Stroud captured 11 region titles and led Calvary Day to the Class A state finals in 2013. Yet when asked what he treasures most, the answer has nothing to do with trophies or win totals. "The most important thing to me are the relationships I made with our players," says Stroud, now 61 and serving as Calvary Day's athletic director. "The best part is when you have players come back to see you and you realize you were able to make a difference in their lives."

As the game evolved over his 33-year career, Stroud's role shifted toward being more of a program CEO. But he never lost his passion for the hands-on work — the day-to-day grind of teaching fundamentals and instilling discipline. "When you're working with a player every day and see the improvements he makes during the season — that's where you see the influence you can have as a coach," he reflects.

For his lasting impact both on and off the field, Stroud will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Coastal Empire Sports Awards show, presented by Chatham Orthopaedic Associates, on June 5th at the Savannah Convention Center. It's a fitting honor for a coach who understood that the greatest victories aren't always measured in wins and losses — they're measured in the lives you help shape along the way.
