Less than one month after becoming Butler's Director of Player Development under coach Ronald Nored, former Butler PG Aaron Thompson is leaving.

In a stunning twist that has sent ripples through the college basketball world, former Butler point guard Aaron Thompson is stepping away from his freshly-minted role as Director of Player Development under new head coach Ronald Nored—just weeks after accepting the position.

Thompson, a Maryland native, was announced as part of Nored's staff on April 13, marking a homecoming for the beloved ex-Bulldog. But less than a month later, he's packing his bags for Washington, D.C., to return to George Washington University as an assistant coach under Chris Caputo. The news was first reported by Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 and confirmed by the IndyStar.

This move brings Thompson full circle. He launched his coaching career at GW in 2023 as Director of Player Development before earning a promotion to assistant coach in 2024. Now, he's heading back to that same assistant role, leaving Butler to regroup just as the offseason gears up.

Thompson's departure leaves a gap in Nored's revamped staff, which already features holdovers from former coach Thad Matta's tenure—general manager/assistant coach Tony Bollier and assistant coach Jon Diebler—alongside newcomers Kotie Kimble (from Furman), Jalen Courtney-Williams (from LSU), and former Butler player and assistant Emerson Kampen. It's a deep bench, but losing a familiar face like Thompson so quickly is a tough break for a program looking to build momentum.

For Bulldogs fans, this is a bittersweet reminder of how quickly the coaching carousel can spin. Thompson's loyalty to his roots is clear, but his sudden exit leaves Butler searching for stability in a pivotal offseason.
