Brian Smith, former head coach of the Ohio University Bobcats, has filed a lawsuit against the university for his firing in December.

In a dramatic turn of events that has sent shockwaves through the college football world, former Ohio University Bobcats head coach Brian Smith has filed a lawsuit against the university following his controversial firing in December. The legal battle, which began on May 8 in the Ohio Court of Claims, alleges wrongful termination and breach of contract, setting the stage for a high-stakes confrontation between the coach and his former employer.

Smith, who was dismissed after just one season at the helm, claims the university rushed to judgment without conducting a proper investigation. According to court documents, the termination stemmed from allegations that Smith had an inappropriate relationship with an undergraduate student—a charge he has not denied but argues was mishandled by university officials. The lawsuit seeks damages equal to the remainder of his contract, which was set to run through 2029, along with interest and attorney fees.

The financial stakes are considerable. Smith's contract included a base salary of $615,000, supplemented by $135,000 in additional income and biannual bonuses of $50,000. If the university had terminated him "without cause," they would have been obligated to pay his salary for the full contract term. Instead, the school fired him "with cause" on December 17, citing the relationship and an alleged public intoxication incident.

"This case is about accountability," said Smith's attorney, Rex Elliott, in a statement. "OU's actions have irreparably harmed Coach Smith's coaching career, and he is owed the full balance of his contractually agreed-upon compensation."

The controversy first erupted on December 1, when Smith was placed on administrative leave. University President Lori Stewart Gonzalez later sent a letter detailing the accusations, claiming Smith had carried on the relationship with the student at the Ohio University Inn and had appeared intoxicated during a public appearance. Records also show Smith had been reprimanded weeks earlier for violating the university's alcohol policy, including storing alcohol in his office desk.

For fans and followers of Ohio University football, this legal drama adds another layer of complexity to a program already in transition. Smith's firing leaves the Bobcats searching for stability, while the lawsuit raises questions about how universities handle allegations against high-profile coaches. As the case unfolds, all eyes will be on the Ohio Court of Claims to see if Smith can prove his termination was unjust—and whether the university will have to pay a heavy price for its decision.
